AQA GCSE Maths is one of the most widespread maths exams in the UK. Whether you're a student preparing to sit the exam or a parent trying to support revision, this guide covers all the essentials you need to know. From paper structure to revision tips, as well as past paper resources, we've got you covered!

What is AQA GCSE Maths?

AQA is one of the main exam boards in the UK. Their GCSE Maths course is designed to assess a student's understanding of key mathematical concepts through a range of application and problem-solving questions.

AQA offers both Foundation Tier (grades 1 to 5) and Higher Tier (grades 4 to 9). At KSOL, our course focuses on the Higher Tier students aiming for top grades (7 to 9).

AQA GCSE Maths Exam Structure

The AQA GCSE Maths exam is split into three written papers:

  • Paper 1: Non-calculator
  • Paper 2: Calculator
  • Paper 3: Calculator

Each paper is:

  • 1 hour 30 minutes long
  • Worth 80 marks
  • Equally weighted (33.3% of the final grade)

All papers include a mix of question types: short single-mark questions, structured multi-step problems and questions set in real-life contexts.

Key Topics you Need to Know

The AQA syllabus covers the following topic areas:

  • Numbers
  • Algebra
  • Ratio, proportion and rates of change
  • Geometry and measures
  • Probability
  • Statistics

Each area will appear across all three papers, so it's important to revise widely and not just focus on one section.

How to Revise for AQA GCSE Maths

Here are some proven revision strategies tailored to the AQA exam style:

  • Use AQA-specific questions: Practising using AQA questions helps to familiarise you with the style and wording of questions.
  • Mix topics regularly: AQA papers often integrate multiple topics in a single question. Mix your revision to reflect that.
  • Check command words: Terms like "show that", "estimate" and "give a reason" have specific meanings, understanding them can be the difference between 2 marks and 0.
